Iris on Fire

Description

This is the second of my irises. This time I was to do an analgous painting (three colors next to each other on the color wheel) of my design. I chose orange, red-orange, and red, though the orange may look a bit yellow because of the glazing technique I used. I used layers for control over my colors, brightness, and used an initial, translucent orange wash on the flower for vibrancy. I didn't use this on the background and you can see the difference in vibracy. I love using matte medium. It thins the paint for glazing and washes, and keeps the vibracy, unlike water. I used a painterly technique because I was not concerned with pictoral representation as I was with expressing the feeling of passion. I think I would like the background to be set back further, though. I may adjust this later.

I used the same material as I did on the Iris Blues: acrylic, medim, bristol

The reason why I like this more than the other two is because of the texture. It makes me think of ...still motion, if that makes any sense. Kind like, even though it's not really moving, you know it must move some because it's alive. It looks very interesting, like looking at a plant leaf under a microscope and seeing all of it's cells. I guess for short what I'm saying is, the texture makes this picture look alive, even the background.

I also like how much control you have with paint. You have very clean, sharp line. Despite the fact the flower and the picture are very similar in color, your skill with paint has enabled the flower to stand our from it's background.

I wouldn't change the background, I like it how it is :)
